Indonesia: Students to protest outside Batam City Regional People's Representative Council and BP Batam offices in Batam Dec. 23
Student protest planned outside Batam City Regional People's Representative Council and BP Batam offices in Batam, Indonesia, 09:00 Dec. 23.
Students affiliated with the Batam City Student Alliance and Regional Coordinator of the All-Indonesian Student Executive Board of North Sumatra (SUMBAGUT) plan to protest outside the Batam City Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) and BP Batam government offices in Batam, Riau Islands Province, from 09:00 Dec. 23. Participants will denounce alleged recent violence against local communities on Rempang Island by employees associated with the Eco-City project. The gathering may be well attended.
Increased security measures are likely around the protest sites, including the deployment of additional security personnel and the imposition of security cordons, diversions, and road closures. Associated localized transport disruptions are probable. Scuffles are possible, especially if police attempt to disperse demonstrators trying to bypass security barriers.
Exercise caution near any protests as a precaution. In the event of scuffles, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations; do not navigate roadblocks. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
