Martinique: Further unrest possible in Fort-de-France after protests overnight Dec. 30/31

Overnight protests in Fort-de-France, Martinique, Dec. 30/31. Further unrest possible.

Warning

Further bouts of civil unrest are possible in Fort-de-France through early January following overnight unrest on Dec. 30/31. Protests started after a court decision involving a local activist, Rodrigue Petitot. Petitot is to remain in custody until his next court date on Jan. 21. Supporters of Petitot opposed to the decision established roadblocks and burnt debris in central Fort-de-France. As of Dec. 31, the debris continues to disrupt public transport in the city.

Demonstrations may continue along major roads, in the city centers, near court and government buildings, or elsewhere in Martinique over the coming days. Police are likely to deploy to protest sites. Clashes are possible, and further disruptions to road travel are possible should protests occur.

Avoid all protests. Reconfirm all transport services. Heed the directives of officials.
