Morocco: Medical interns and residents plan nationwide strikes Dec. 3 and 5 and protests Dec. 4
Medical interns and residents in Morocco plan nationwide strikes Dec. 3 and 5 and protests Dec. 4. Disruptions to medical services likely.
Medical interns and resident doctors plan to strike nationwide Dec. 3 and 5 over various grievances, including low salaries and poor working conditions. Organizers have also announced that they will hold demonstrations at university hospitals across the country Dec. 4. Gatherings are also possible outside the Ministry of Health in Rabat, as well as regional health directorates and public squares nationwide. Dozens to a hundred people could participate in each protest.
The strike will likely reduce nonemergency health services at hospitals; facilities will continue to provide emergency treatment. Increased security and localized transport disruptions are probable near any demonstrations that materialize. Clashes between police and protesters are possible, particularly if the latter are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.
Confirm all appointments at medical facilities for the duration of the strike. Be prepared for delays at hospitals; call in advance if possible, as conditions will likely vary at different facilities. Allow additional time for travel near likely gathering sites. Avoid all protests due to possible clashes; exercise caution around hospitals, government buildings, and other popular demonstration sites.
