Pakistan: Local government officials plan rallies near Rawalpindi's Central Jail and Islamabad's Parliament building Dec. 17
Protests to occur in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Dec. 17. Increased security, traffic disruptions likely; clashes possible.
Local government representatives from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province will rally outside the Central Jail in Rawalpindi, Punjab Province 11:00 Dec. 17, and Islamabad's Parliament House 15:00 Dec. 17. The action is to denounce alleged funding delays by the provincial government led by the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) party. Organizers claim over 20,000 people will join the action; actual attendance is likely to be up to a few thousand people. Due to legal orders and security concerns, venue and date changes are possible at short notice.
Authorities will likely monitor the rallies and may try to disperse the gatherings if they are especially disruptive. Security cordons are certain around Adiala Jail and the parliament building to limit access to protesters. Activists may clash with security forces or rival party supporters. Localized transport disruptions, including road closures and traffic diversions, are likely near the rally venues, especially if attendees hold processions along or block roads. Worst-affected routes are likely to be Adiala and Muree roads and sections of National Highway 5 (N-5). Rerouting of public bus services serving the affected areas is possible. Limited disruptions to local businesses are possible.
Avoid protests as a precaution. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately for a secure, non-government building. Confirm road status in both cities; allow additional travel time near the gatherings. Follow all security and traffic advisories.
