Taiwan: Pro-democracy protesters plan to stage rallies at Kuomintang party headquarters and Legislative Yuan in Taipei Dec. 18-20
Pro-democracy activists to rally against Kuomintang party in Taipei, Taiwan, Dec. 18-20. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.
Pro-democracy activists affiliated with the Bluebird Movement plan to stage demonstrations Dec. 18-20 in Taipei to denounce the alleged abuse of power by majority Kuomintang (KMT) party legislators. The protests come after ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmakers were locked out while a legislative committee approved the preliminary review of draft amendments to the Public Officials Election and Recall Act Dec. 16. Event organizers have confirmed the following protest plans:
Dec. 18: KMT party headquarters from 18:30
Dec. 19: Legislative Yuan from 18:30
Dec. 20: Legislative Yuan from 09:30
The largest attendance is likely Dec. 19; thousands of people will probably join the action. Several hundred people could attend rallies Dec. 18 and 20.
Heightened security measures, including road blocks, are likely around protest sites. Localized transport and business disruptions are probable. Increased demand for public transport is likely as activists arrive and leave the rally sites. Although the demonstrations will probably pass off peacefully, scuffles between police and activists cannot be ruled out.
Avoid protest sites as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for localized business and transport disruptions Dec. 18-20. Heed all official transport and security directives.
