US: Activists to demonstrate New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco, Dec. 4
Activists to protest in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, US, Dec. 4. Heightened security likely.
Activists plan to protest in New York City, New York, as well as Los Angeles and San Francisco, California, during the late afternoon and evening Dec. 4. The purpose of the demonstrations is to demand the resignation of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeul. It remains unclear how many participants may attend. The following protests are planned:
Los Angeles, California: South Korean Consulate on Wilshire Boulevard from 18:00.
New York City, New York: South Korean Consulate on Park Avenue from 17:00.
San Francisco, California: San Francisco Federal Building on 7th Street from 18:00.
Police will likely deploy in all demonstration areas to monitor the protests. Movement by demonstrators or police road closures will likely disrupt transport near protest sites. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the protest areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
President Yoon declared martial law across South Korea in a televised briefing late on Dec. 3, accusing the opposition of controlling parliament, aligning with North Korea, and hindering government functions through alleged anti-state activities. The announcement sparked disruptive demonstrations outside the National Assembly in Seoul, prompting the deployment of military personnel, who withdrew after the legislature unanimously blocked the presidential decree; Yoon subsequently retracted his declaration.
