Vietnam: Adverse weather forecast across central regions through at least Dec. 26
Severe weather forecast across parts of central Vietnam through at least Dec. 26. Flooding and associated disruptions possible.
Severe weather is forecast across parts of central Vietnam through at least Dec. 26. The Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms through Dec. 26. Forecast models indicate rainfall of 4-10 cm (1.5-4 inches), with locally heavier totals of more than 20 cm (8 inches) from Da Nang to Khanh Hoa provinces late Dec. 23-24 and 3-6 cm (1-2.5 inches) in the eastern Central Highlands Region Dec. 24. Moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are likely over central Vietnam Dec. 25. The heavy rain is likely to gradually ease Dec. 26. Strong winds, lightning, and possible tornadoes may accompany downpours. The NCHMF has issued a level 1 warning of natural disaster risk due to heavy rain across the affected area. Officials could update and extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed or a lack of stormwater drainage systems. Sites downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rain has saturated the soil. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services may occur where significant flooding, strong winds, or landslides impact utility networks.
Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters.
Severe weather could also trigger flight delays and cancellations at airports in the affected regions. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible in areas with heavy rainfall and potential track inundation.
Localized business disruptions may occur in low-lying areas; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of flood damage to facilities and some employees' inability to reach work sites.
Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where flooding has been forecast. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
