Albania: Opposition groups plan demonstrations in central Tirana Jan. 6, 8
Opposition parties plan to demonstrate in central Tirana, Albania, Jan. 6, 8. Increased security, disruptions likely.
Opposition groups plan to demonstrate in central Tirana in support of Sali Berisha, the Democratic Party leader and former president and prime minister. As of early Jan. 6, protestors are gathering at the SPAK (Special Prosecution building) to support Berisha, who will attend a hearing there from 10:00. Berisha has called for a further demonstration on Jan. 8 from 12:00, at the Democratic Party headquarters. It is possible that several hundred to over 1,000 protestors will take part in the events. Additional protests are likely in coming days.
Authorities will likely deploy additional police to monitor any demonstrations and to mitigate disruptions. Heightened security will likely prompt localized transport disruptions, especially if protesters march on or block roadways. The events are likely to pass off peacefully.
Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional travel time near the march route. Heed all official transport and security advisories. Immediately leave the area at the first signs of security disturbances.
