Colombia: Truckers planning to launch nationwide strike starting Jan. 7
Unionized truckers may launch a strike across Colombia, starting Jan. 7, to protest the national government's policies.
Unionized truckers are planning to launch a nationwide strike, starting at 00:01 Jan. 7. The action would be to protest what they allege are unfulfilled promises by the national government, following a similar strike in September 2024, over diesel prices, among other issues.
Despite the initial call for a strike to start early Jan. 7, it is unclear if the strike will move forward or how many unions will join. Truckers from the Santander department had initially confirmed the strike, but some of its members continue to negotiate with the government.
If the strike moves forward, significant ground transport and business disruptions are likely nationwide. Protests by striking activists are possible.
Plan for delays and alternative routes if the strike moves forward. Do not attempt to cross a roadblock if you encounter one. Heed instructions from authorities.
