India: Authorities bolstering security in parts of Jammu and Kashmir ahead of prime minister's official visit to Ganderbal District Jan. 13

Tight security ongoing in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, India, ahead of Prime Minister Modi's official visit to Ganderbal District Jan. 13.

Warning

Tight security is ongoing in parts of the Kashmir Valley in Jammu and Kashmir union territory, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Jan. 13 visit to Ganderbal District. Modi will inaugurate the Z Morh Tunnel in Gagangir and address a public rally in Sonamarg.

Modi's trip could incorporate stops at other urban centers in Kashmir Valley, including prominent government buildings and cultural sites. While no group has yet announced plans for any demonstrations, activists could stage protests near areas hosting the prime minister.

Measures such as security checkpoints and vehicular checks are probable in affected areas. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible. Minor flight disruptions could occur at airports where the prime minister departs and arrives.

Exercise caution in the affected areas. Confirm business appointments, road statuses, and transport reservations through Jan. 13. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan for travel delays and business disruptions in areas that Modi visits. Carry proper identification documents to present at any security checkpoints. Heed all official security and transport advisories.

Construction works on the tunnel were completed in Oct. 2024, but the inauguration ceremony was delayed due to a terror attack Oct. 20, during which unidentified gunmen killed seven people at a worker's camp for the tunnel construction.
