Kenya: Activists plan nationwide protests Jan. 6 over alleged government-sanctioned disappearances

Activists plan protests across Kenya Jan. 6 over alleged government-sanctioned abductions. Associated disruptions likely, clashes possible.

Warning

Activists affiliated with youth and human rights groups plan to protest across Kenya Jan. 6 over alleged government-sanction enforced disappearances. In Nairobi, demonstrators plan to block key routes, including Jogoo Road, Kiambu Road, Lang’ata Road, Limuru Road, Mombasa Road, Ngong Road, Thika Road, Uhuru Highway, and Waiyaki Way. In Mombasa, the activist group Kenyans Against Abduction plans to march from Pembe za Ndovu to the Urban Police Station. Reports also indicate that activists plan to camp outside Mombasa Law Courts. Other cities where protests could occur include Embu and Karatina. Thousands are likely to participate in the rallies, and it is unclear how long the demonstrations will last.

Authorities will monitor any rallies that materialize and may attempt to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Enhanced security measures, such as road closures or temporary restrictions on public movement, are probable. Business and transportation disruptions are likely, especially near the protest sites. Clashes between activists and police are possible.

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible violence. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan for business and transport disruptions, especially around Nairobi and Mombasa. Confirm business appointments and road status. Allow additional time for journeys. Follow all instructions from security personnel.
