Morocco: Major trade union calls for nationwide protests Jan. 5
Confederation Democratique du Travail union calls for protests across Morocco Jan. 5. Localized transport disruptions likely.
The Confederation democratique du travail (CDT) union has called for all unions and unionized workers to organize nationwide protests on Jan. 5, including in the main regional capitals. The action is to denounce the adoption of a new bill legislating the right to strike. Gatherings are possible outside the House of Representatives in Rabat, public squares, and main streets in regional capitals nationwide, including Agadir, Casablanca, Fes, Marrakesh, and Tangier.
Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that materialize. Clashes between police and protesters are possible, particularly if the latter are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.
Avoid all possible protests as a precaution. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time if traveling through affected areas Jan. 5.
