Pakistan: Activists likely to continue sporadic demonstrations in Hunza Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, through at least mid-January

Sporadic protests likely to continue in Hunza Valley, Pakistan, through at least mid-January. Increased security likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with various organizations, including the All Parties Traders Association, will likely continue their ongoing series of sporadic demonstrations in Hunza Valley through at least mid-January. The purpose of these actions is to denounce extended electrical power load-shedding hours. Several protests related to the power shortages have taken place recently, including a sit-in protest near the Aliabad area, during which participants blocked a major section of the Karakoram Highway (KKH). The blockade has disrupted the transportation of goods to the China-Pakistan border.

Although organizers have not announced specific plans for further gatherings as of late Jan. 6, related demonstrations are possible in the affected area and other parts of Gilgit-Baltistan over the coming days. Potential rally sites include prominent government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Participation will likely vary by location and sponsoring entity. Well-attended gatherings could attract thousands of participants.

Authorities will likely monitor any such gatherings as a precaution. Depending on operational needs, officials could impose security restrictions. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Disruptions to local businesses and transportation services are likely.

As a precaution, avoid any demonstration that materializes. Keep away from locations where security personnel appear to be deploying, and leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for potential localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
