Political activists to protest in central Alicante, Castellon, Madrid, and Valencia Jan. 9-10. Heightened security likely.
Political activists affiliated with Venezuelan opposition groups plan to protest in Alicante, Castellona de la Plana, Madrid, and Valencia Jan. 9-10. The protests aim to denounce the Venezuelan government and demonstrate support for opposition political leader Edmundo Gonzalez, currently in exile in Spain. Several hundred to a few thousand might attend the rallies. Gatherings are planned at the following locations:
Alicante: Protest at intersection of Passeig Esplanada d'Espanya/Esplanada de Espana and Rumbla de Mendez Nunez from 17:00 Jan. 9.
Castellon de la Plana: March from Plaza Sierra de Gredos to Plaza de Cardona Vives from 17:30 Jan. 10.
Madrid: Protest at Puerta del Sol from 18:00 Jan. 9.
Valencia: Protest at Placa de l'Ajuntament/Plaza del Ayuntamiento from 18:00 Jan. 9.
Authorities will likely deploy increased security at the protest sites and march route to monitor the gatherings. Localized road travel and transport disruptions are likely near the protest site and march route. Violence is not anticipated.
