Heightened security, road closures likely due to state funeral for former US president Jimmy Carter, in Washington, DC, US, Jan. 7-9.
Heightened security and road closures are scheduled in areas of Washington, DC, through at least Jan. 9, due to the state funeral for former US president, Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Dec. 29. Carter's remains will arrive in the city around noon on Jan. 7, and will be taken to the US Navy Memorial, along Pennsylvania Avenue NW, at 15:30. From there there will be a funeral procession to the US Capitol. Carter will lie in state until early Jan. 9, when a funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral, along Wisconsin Avenue NW, starting at 09:30.
Officials have announced the closure of multiple roads near the National Mall and the US Capitol, through at least 04:30 Jan. 8, including:
Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 15th and 1st Streets NW
Constitution Avenue between 14th Street NW and First Street NW
Madison Drive, and Jefferson Drive, between 14th and 3rd Streets
12th and 7th Streets NW, between E Street and Independence Avenue NW
11th, 10th, 9th, and 6th Streets between E Street and Constitution Avenue NW
Roads around the Washington National Cathedral will be closed between 12:00-15:00 Jan. 9, including parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin Avenues NW. Additionally, the Archives-Navy Memorial metro station will be closed through 05:00 Jan. 8.
Disruptions are likely around the affected areas. Large gatherings are possible in some of these locations, including the US Capitol and the Washington National Cathedral.
Heed instructions from authorities. Plan for delays and alternative routes if operating around the National Mall in Washington, DC, Jan. 7-9.
