Power outages affecting parts of south-central Alaska, US, Jan. 12. Transport and business disruptions likely.

Warning

Power outages have been reported in parts of south-central Alaska on Jan. 12 in connection with a windstorm that caused widespread damage and probably downed power lines. The outages were impacting more than 28,000 customers across the boroughs of Anchorage, Matanuska-Susitna, and Kenai Peninsula as of around 14:30.

Transport and business disruptions are likely in affected areas; businesses without backup generators could temporarily suspend operations. Telecommunications disruptions are also possible, including mobile SMS, voice, and internet service disruptions. Additionally, the power disruptions could result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, including ATMs and fueling stations.

Charge mobile and essential electrical devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Exercise caution when driving in areas impacted by power outages. Park vehicles in secure areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices when necessary.
