Stringent Security Planned for World Economic Forum 2025 Amid Heightened Global Tensions
The World Economic Forum (WEF) is set to hold its 55th annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Jan. 20-24, 2025. The main venue will be the Davos Congress Centre, with related events occurring at various locations throughout the town. As in previous years, heads of state, senior government officials, business leaders, and civil society representatives from multiple countries are expected to attend. Swiss authorities are implementing stringent security measures to ensure the event's safety, especially in light of heightened global tensions.
Enhanced Security Measures
In response to the increasing complexity of the global security landscape, Swiss authorities are deploying thousands of troops and additional security personnel throughout Davos. Measures include establishing checkpoints on routes into the town and restricting traffic on certain roads in the town center. Security zones will be enforced around key locations such as the Davos Congress Centre, the Hotel Seehof, and the Alpengold Hotel, accessible only to individuals with proper accreditation. Enhanced security protocols will also be in place at transport hubs, including Davos Dorf and Davos Platz train stations, as well as nearby airports, particularly Zurich Airport (ZRH). Attendees should anticipate sporadic disruptions on major routes into Davos due to security escorts.
Protests and Demonstrations
Several activist groups are expected to protest during the WEF, focusing on environmental, social, and economic issues. Local authorities will regulate the location and size of demonstrations, typically permitting gatherings of up to 500 people at Davos Postplatz. Larger demonstrations may occur in other Swiss cities, including Zurich, with attendance potentially reaching into the thousands. A recent protest saw around 350 demonstrators calling for climate justice and the end of the WEF in Davos.
Cybersecurity Concerns
The WEF's Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2025 highlights the increasing complexity of the cyber landscape, driven by geopolitical tensions, emerging technologies, and sophisticated cyber threats. Organizations are advised to adopt a security-first mindset to navigate these challenges.
Advice for WEF Attendees
- Stay Informed: Keep abreast of the latest security updates and risk intelligence alerts.
- Plan Travel Accordingly: Check the status of routes and public transport services before traveling to Davos and allow additional time for potential delays.
- Follow Security Instructions: Adhere to all directives issued by security personnel.
- Avoid Protests: Steer clear of demonstrations to minimize personal risk and avoid associated disruptions.
By following these guidelines, attendees can contribute to a secure and successful World Economic Forum in Davos.
