Increased security in the vicinity of Shakhola Forest, Kilifi County, Kenya, as of April 26. Curfew and other restrictions in place

Heightened security measures are in place in the vicinity of Shakhola Forest in Kilifi Country, as of April 26. Police have been deployed to the area amid an ongoing investigation into an alleged cult massacre that has left at least 90 people dead. The focus of the investigation is Chakama Ranch. An 18:00-06:00 nighttime curfew and a ban on public gatherings have been implemented in the area. The curfew runs through late May. Part of the impacted area has also been restricted to the public.
Authorities may extend the curfew beyond its currently slated expiration date and/or impose other restrictions on movement or public assembly in the impacted area or more widely. Police forces will almost certainly maintain a heavy presence in the area as investigations continue.

Exercise a high degree of caution and heed the instructions of authorities. Abide by the curfew, maintain a low profile, and avoid nighttime movement. Carry proper identification and travel documents at all times. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if stopped at a security checkpoint.
