Paraguay: Campesino protests in Asunción from July 11

Campesinos launch indefinite series of protests in capital Asunción July 11; traffic disruptions expected, clashes possible

Warning

Event

Groups representing rural inhabitants (campesinos) are launching a series of protests in the capital Asunción on Tuesday, July 11. On Monday evening, a large caravan of campesinos arrived in the capital from across the country to demand that the government declare an agricultural state of emergency and provide assistance to rural farmers. They have set up camp in the central Plaza de Armas.

On Tuesday, a large protest is set to take place in the downtown area beginning at 06:00 (local time). Clashes between protesters and police are possible, particularly if protesters erect roadblocks. Localized traffic disruptions are to be expected.

The campesinos are expected to continue to hold protests in the capital until the government addresses their demands

Advice

Individuals in Asunción, and Paraguay more generally, are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution and to never attempt to cross a roadblock without authorization.
