Thailand: Increased security ahead of coup anniversary on May 22

Event

The Thai government has announced that increased security measures will be deployed throughout major cities before Monday, May 22, the third anniversary of the coup which placed the current Thai government in power. The move follows a bomb blast near Sanam Luang on Monday, May 15, which injured two people.

Additional police will be deployed throughout major cities, and traffic restrictions may be put in place near processions. 

Context

The Thai government has expressed concern that anti-government groups are attempting to trigger unrest within Thailand after a series of minor explosions in the capital over the past  year. On Monday, May 15, a small explosion was reported near the National Theater in Bangkok at around 20:30 (local time), injuring two people. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack, however authorities believe the incident is linked to an explosion outside of the old Government Lottery Office on April 5, which also injured two people.
