South Africa: World Economic Forum in Durban May 3-5
Durban to host World Economic Forum May 3-5; anticipate heightened security
Event
The World Economic Forum on Africa (WEF Africa) is scheduled to be held in Durban from May 3 - 5. The three day event, held at the Nkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Center (ICC), will be attended by over 1100 delegates, including South Africa's Finance Minister, Malusi Gigaba, Zambian President, Edgar Lungu, among 18 other heads of state.
Security is likely to be tight near the ICC and in the city center, and extra police will be deployed. Road closures will also be in place around the summit venue, causing traffic disruptions.
The event is scheduled amidst economic and political upheaval within the country, and protests are planned near the convention center. The People's Economic Forum NGO has announced that it will hold demonstrations against the WEF Africa. Police are likely to forcefully disperse any protests.
Context
South Africa is facing economic headwinds as the currency continues to lose value, and higher borrowing costs mean the government will have less money for investment projects aimed at stimulating the sluggish economy. On April 4 credit rating agency Standard and Poor's downgraded South Africa's credit rating to "junk" status, followed by ratings agency Fitch on Friday, April 7. The week before, President Zuma had made the controversial decision to dismiss Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.
Several opposition parties in Parliament have tabled a non-confidence vote against the president, which will be debated at a yet-to-be-determined date.
Advice
Individuals in the country are advised to avoid all protests due to the potential for violence.
On a separate note, individuals in South Africa- particularly in urban areas - are advised to be on guard against high levels of criminal activity and to maintain a low profile at all times. Be particularly vigilant after dusk and avoid traveling on foot after nightfall. Criminals may be armed; do not resist if confronted and do not look your attacker(s) directly in the eye. Drive with windows closed, doors locked, and all personal possessions hidden from sight.
