Loud blast followed by plumes of black smoke heard underground in Toronto's business district on May 1; cause unknown, King Street West and Bay Street cordoned off

An explosion of unknown origin occurred under Toronto's business district at around 18:00 (local time) on Monday, May 1; black smoke could be seen billowing out from under Scotia Plaza immediately after the blast. Police have cordoned off King Street West and Bay Street in the area while they investigate the situation, currently being reported as a "possible Hydro electical issue." Subway service on Line 1 is currently bypassing King station in both directions. There have been no reported injuries, but authorities have requested that people avoid the area.
