Uganda: Series of arrests of opposition activists reported July 20
Police officials report dozens of opposition activists were arrested on July 19-20 for illegally protesting; additional demonstrations possible in coming days and weeks

Police officials announced on Thursday, July 20, that dozens of opposition activists had been arrested in recent days. According to a police spokesperson, 56 people were detained on Wednesday, July 19, and another 13 on July 20 for illegally gathering. Local media sources claim that the activists were arrested while attempting to collect signatures for a petition to oppose a constitutional change that would allow current President Yoweri Museveni to run for another term. Additional demonstrations may occur in the coming weeks.

Opposition supporters are concerned that President Museveni will attempt to amend the constitution to allow himself to run for another term in 2021. Under the current laws, the president must be under the age of 75 upon election. Museveni will by 77 by the time of the next vote. He has been in power for the past 31 years.
