Jordan: Larger-than-usual demonstrations expected in Amman July 21
British authorities warn that larger-than-usual demonstrations are possible in Amman on July 21 amid heightened regional tensions
Event
The British government issued an advisory on July 19 warning of possible large demonstrations in Amman on Friday, July 21, amid recent tensions in the country and region surrounding events in neighboring Israel. Although no specific information has been released regarding planned protests in the coming days, demonstrations are likely after Friday prayers. An increased security presence and possible transportation disruptions should be expected if protests do occur.
UK authorities also warned travelers to avoid the Desert Highway (Highway 15) between Karak and Aqaba due to reports of local tribes blocking traffic in a number of places between the two towns.
Context
Tensions have increased in the region this past week due to new security measures put in place in Jerusalem at the Temple Mount. Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Amman on July 15 to protest against the decision by Israeli authorities to close the holy site after two police officers were shot and killed just outside the complex on July 14.
Meanwhile, local tribes have reportedly blocked the Desert Highway in a number of places since Tuesday, July 17. The tribes are believed to be demonstrating against the life sentence issued to a Jordanian soldier who was convicted of killing three American soldiers in November 2016.
Advice
Individuals in Jordan are advised to maintain a low profile and to avoid all protests as they could result in violent clashes between protesters and security forces.
