The Islamic State releases a statement claiming responsibility for London bombing on September 15; government raises threat level

The Islamic State (IS) issued a statement on Friday, September 15, claiming responsibility for the bombing at the Parsons Green tube station in London. According to the IS statement, the attack was carried out by a “detachment” of the group. Prime Minister Theresa May announced that the terror level in the country had been raised to “critical,” the highest level, after IS released their statement. A manhunt is currently underway for individuals suspected of being connected to the bombing. According to media sources, the police may have identified at least one suspect from CCTV footage. Details are still emerging and significant security operations and associated disruptions (road closures, security checkpoints, etc.) should be anticipated throughout London and surrounding areas as authorities continue their search for suspects.

Context

An improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in the Parsons Green station at around 08:25 (local time) during the rush hour commute. At 10:20, the Metropolitan Counter Terrorism Command announced that the incident was being treated as a terrorist attack. According to initial reports, the IED was intended to cause significant harm. It remains unclear if the device detonated prematurely or malfunctioned. At least 22 people were wounded during the incident.
