Armed men attack and steal weapons from a police station located in the Abobo district of Abidjan on September 26
Event
Unidentified gunmen attacked a police station in the Abobo district of the economic capital Abidjan on Tuesday, September 26. According to a local source, the assailants stole weapons but no casualties were reported. All police officers reportedly fled the premises.
Context
The security situation in Côte d'Ivoire has been tense since the beginning of the year due to various mutinies carried out by soldiers and police. A series of attacks on police stations has taken place since mid-July throughout the country, beginning on July 19 with an attack at the Cocody Police Academy that killed one police officer. Four other similar attacks followed: July 29 in Fresco, July 22 in Azaguié, August 4 in Adzopé, and September 3 in Songon. In addition, a string of jail breaks have occurred, including in Katiola on September 3, in Abidjan on August 8, and in Gagnoa on August 6.
In Abidjan, an increased number of police have been deployed to address the insecurity.
