United Kingdom: Various rail strikes beginning October 3 /update 2

Rail strikes October 3 and 5 and London Underground strike 24 October 5; union threatens further industrial actions across the Greater Anglia rail network through November 6

Warning

Event

Members of the Rail, Maritime, and Transport (RMT) union at Southern Railway, Merseyrail, Arriva Rail North, and Greater Anglia are planning to strike on Tuesday, October 3, and Thursday, October 5. Some 300,000 passengers are expected to be affected. Furthermore, a union representing Greater Anglia rail workers has threatened to hold another industrial action from October 10 to November 6; during this period, conductors are asked to refuse to work overtime, which will effectively prevent trains from running as normal.

Additionally, London Underground (Tube) drivers will stage a 24-hour strike on October 5. Around 3500 Tube drivers are expected to participate, which would cause significant delays and cancelations throughout the network. Further information regarding the effects of the strike will be released in the coming days by Transport for London (TfL).

The strikes could delay the renovation of the closed Liverpool’s Lime Street Station, which is currently expected to reopen Sunday, October 22.

Advice

Travelers are advised to expect significant disruptions on services provided by the abovementioned railways and should make arrangements for alternative means of transportation on those dates.

Additionally, passengers using Liverpool’s Lime Street Station should consult Network Rail for route and schedule changes during the construction period.
