Activists hold protest calling for action against child abuse in Ulaanbaatar on October 26; further demonstrations may occur

Mongolian activists gathered in Ulaanbaatar’s Sukhbaatar Square on Thursday, October 26, to protest against child abuse. The protest, entitled “Open your Eyes,” called for citizens to unite against the issue and call for change. Organizers gathered over 500 signatures to petition the government to take action. Thursday’s demonstration was the third such gathering in recent days, and was peaceful. Additional protests may occur in the coming weeks.

Context

Protests are generally rare in Mongolia and most tend to remain peaceful. Nevertheless, sporadic outbreaks of violence occasionally occur.
