Flooding in Penang kills five people on November 5; at least 3300 people evacuated

Warning

Event

Flooding was reported on Sunday, November 5, throughout Penang state, including in the city of George Town, following a day of heavy rain. The most affected area was the Central Seberang Perai district, where floodwaters reached up to 3.5 m (12 feet). According to local sources, five people were killed in the floods and at least 3300 were evacuated, mostly from Central Seberang Perai.

Further rain is forecast in Penang, which could aggravate the situation. Continued transportation disruptions as well as power outages are therefore possible.

Context

Seasonal flooding hits Malaysian states every year during the monsoon season (typically October through February). Flooding regularly results in mass evacuations and school closures.

Advice

Individuals in Penang are advised to monitor weather forecasts and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
