Cuba: Municipal elections postponed until November 26

Event

The Cuban government has postponed municipal elections, originally scheduled for October 22, until November 26 to allow time to recover from the damage caused by Hurricane Irma. Voters will select municipal assembly members and deputies to the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP).

Context

Hurricane Irma, which hit Cuba September 8-10, left ten dead in the country and caused severe flooding in Havana, as well as the provinces of Matanzas, Camaguey, and Ceigo de Avila. As of September 18, electricity had been restored in Havana but almost two-thirds of the island remained without power.
