Malaysia: Floods hit Selangor state November 7

Flash floods hit Selangor state November 7; transportation disruptions reported in Klang

Warning

Event

Flash floods were reported in the Klang and Shah Alam areas (located in Selangor state) on Tuesday, November 7, following a night of heavy downpours. According to regional authorities, the water began rising around 04:30 (local time) in Bandar Bukit Raja and Taman Sungai Rasau. Padang Jawa, the Sungai Rasau toll, and the Bukit Raja flyover were also particularly hard-hit by the rising waters. Local sources reported that floodwaters reached up to 1 m (3.2 ft) before slowly receding.

The flooding has not resulted in any casualties or evacuation orders. However, transportation disruptions were reported in affected areas (particularly around Klang), including road closures. Affected roads were being gradually reopened over the course of the day.

According to reports, light rain is forecast to continue in the coming week.

Context

Flooding occurs annually during the monsoon season in Malaysia (typically October through February) and regularly results in mass evacuations and school closures.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor weather forecasts and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
