Philippines: Scores dead following Tropical Storm Tembin Dec. 22

Tropical Storm Tembin (also known as Vinta) struck Mindanao on Friday, December 22, killing at least 100 people. According to officials, the storm affected more than 70,000 people, with 30,000 currently living in shelters. Heavy rains and wind led to the collapse of multiple dams, leading to flooding and landslides in mountainous areas. The majority of deaths occurred in the provinces of Lanao del Norte, Zamboanga del Norte, and Lanao del Sur. Localized power cuts and transportation disruptions are likely to continue in the coming days.

Typhoons and tropical storms regularly strike the Philippines during the monsoon season - which spans from November to April in the northeast, and from May to October in the southwest. On average, roughly 20 typhoons and tropical storms hit the country each year.
