Malaysia: Floods hit Johor, Sabah, and Pahang states January 2

Flooding was reported across the states of Johor, Sabah, and Pahang states on Tuesday, January 2, due to heavy rain that has been falling since Sunday, December 31. The flooding has triggered the evacuation of at least 1500 people. Evacuations have been reported in the following districts: Mersing and Kota Tinggi (Johor state), Rompin, Kuantan, and Jerantut (Pahang state), and Tongod (Sabah state). Heavy rain is forecast to continue to affect Pahang, Johore, and Sabah states at least through Wednesday, January 3.

Officials in Kelantan state are warning that water levels may rise significantly beginning around 01:00 (local time) on Wednesday, January 3, due to ongoing rainfall. Additional flooding is expected to occur in the Gua Musang, Kuala Krai, Machang, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, and Tumpat districts.

Flooding occurs annually during the monsoon season in Malaysia (typically October through February) and regularly results in casualties, mass evacuations, and business and school closures.
