Australia: Extreme heat in several states January 6-7

Extreme heat is forecast to affect several Australian states and the Australian Capital Territory on Saturday, January 6, and Sunday, January 7. Australian authorities have issued associated heat and fire risk warnings in the states of Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, and Tasmania. Temperatures near or above 40°C (104°F) are expected in several cities in the affected regions over the weekend, including in Melbourne (forecast to reach 42°C [108°F] on Saturday), Adelaide (forecast to reach 40°C [104°F] on Saturday), Canberra (forecast to reach 37°C [99°F] on Saturday and 39°C [102°F] on Sunday), and Sydney (forecast to reach 38°C [96°F] on Sunday), among others. Some parts of New South Wales, including Menindee and Ivanhoe, are expected to experience temperatures of 45°C (113°F) on Saturday. Temperatures in most areas affected by the heat wave are expected to decline by Monday, January 8, or Tuesday, January 9.

Consequent wildfires and power outages are possible in the affected areas in the coming hours and days amid the heat wave.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to stay well hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters [0.4 gallons] of water per day and avoid alcohol) and to avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from 12:00 to 16:00). Be especially on guard against symptoms of dehydration or heat stroke in young children and seniors, as they are particularly vulnerable. Do not hesitate to contact emergency services if necessary.
