New York City officials are planning to install some 1500 metal bollards on sidewalks and plazas in the coming weeks in an effort to prevent future vehicle-ramming attacks. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the decision on Tuesday, January 2. The move follows two vehicle-ramming attacks in the city in 2017 which killed nine people in total.

In May 2017, an intoxicated man drove his car onto a crowded sidewalk for three blocks near Times Square, killing one person and wounding 22 others.

In October 2017, an Islamic State (IS) sympathizer carried out a vehicle-ramming attack in Lower Manhattan, killing eight people and wounding nearly a dozen others.
