Australia: Newcastle Airport remains closed until Jan. 15 due to bushfire

Newcastle Airport (New South Wales) closed until January 15 due to nearby bushfires

Warning

Event

All flights have been suspended for the second time at Newcastle Airport (NTL) in New South Wales on Sunday, December 14 due to nearby bushfires. The shutdown began on Saturday afternoon (local time). The airport had expected to be reopened on Sunday, but will now remain closed until earliest Monday, January 15.

Spot fires have continued to burn north of the airport’s runway, with heavy smoke resulting in disruption to flights, and the New South Wales Rural Fire Service has issued an emergency warning for residents in the area.

Advice

Travelers are advised to monitor the situation, follow the advice of local authorities, and confirm the status of their flights prior to departure for the airport.
