Officials warn of significant increase in influenza cases during week leading up to January 22; eligible individuals advised to receive vaccine

Public Health England (PHE) recently released statistics noting a 42 percent increase in doctor consultations for symptoms consistent with influenza, and an 11 percent increase in influenza-related hospitalizations, in the week leading up to Sunday, January 22, as compared to the week prior. Public health officials have advised that all eligible individuals should receive a vaccine as soon as possible.
Context
Influenza is a contagious virus that can spread from human to human. Symptoms include high fever, aching muscles, headache, and respiratory issues. Particularly vulnerable individuals include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, the obese, and individuals suffering from chronic diseases. An annual vaccine is available.
