Mayotte: Tense socio-political situation persists

Event

According to the prefect of Mayotte, only 20 days over the course of 2017 were recorded without socio-political conflict in the French overseas department. As of January 31, there have been no days without conflict (strikes, demonstrations). Furthermore, the prefect added that the island has witnessed an increase in violence (notably rock throwing) and crime. 

Context

Since the fall of 2011, protest movements denouncing, in particular, the increased cost of living - which occasionally result in outbreaks of violence - have regularly threatened the stability of the department. Mayotte remains one of the poorest French overseas departments; 84 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. Strikes, particularly at seaports, have the potential to limit the supply of food and fuel to the archipelago. In February and June 2017, major strikes at the commercial port of Longoni temporarily blocked shipments. Similarly, a strike launched by employees of Total in mid-August 2017 resulted in significant fuel shortages.

Clashes between law enforcement officials and protesters can break out during protests.

Individuals in Mayotte are advised to avoid all demonstrations and to keep abreast of the situation. Stock up on drinkable water and other necessities and take appropriate steps to conserve water as much as possible.
