Guyana: Increased security along Venezuelan border

Guyanese security officials announced on Thursday, February 22, that increased security measures had been deployed along the Guyana-Venezuela border following a series of illegal incursions into Guyana by Venezuelan soldiers and civilians. Security operations are possible in border regions in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Brazilian and Colombian authorities have also increased security measures along their borders with Venezuela; Brazil plans to declare a state of emergency in Roraima state amid an influx of refugees from Venezuela.

According to humanitarian officials, an estimated 500,000 Venezuelans have fled the country since the beginning of the year. The migrant crisis is expected to worsen throughout 2018 as Venezuela's economy continues to falter. Venezuelans face shortages of gasoline, food, medicine, and other basic necessities, as well as extreme rates of violent crime, social unrest, and an ongoing political crisis.
