Malaysia: Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system from mid-April

Event

The Malaysian government announced in 2017 that all foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia would soon require a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP), which will cost MYR 25 (USD 6.50) and remain valid for five years. The tags will progressively be made available to foreign-registered cars entering Malaysia via the Causeway and the Second-Link beginning in mid-April. The VEP will then be introduced at the northern border with Thailand and the southern border with Singapore.

Context

The VEP scheme was originally set to start in January but was delayed. According to the authorities, the VEP system will prevent owners of vehicles with outstanding summonses from leaving the country.
