Italy: Public transit strike in Rome region March 22 /update 1

Public transportation strike in Rome region March 22; buses, trams, trolleys, trains, and subway affected

Warning

Event

Public transportation unions are planning to hold a 24-hour strike in the Rome region on Thursday, March 22. All forms of public transportation - including buses (city buses, suburban buses, night buses), trams, and the subway - will be impacted. Trains operating on the Rome-Lido, Termini-Centocelle, and Rome Civitacastellana-Viterbo lines will also be affected.

Unless averted, significant transportation disruptions (delays, reduced services) are to be expected throughout the Rome metropolitan area during the strike. Increased traffic congestion, demand for taxis, and overcrowding on available services are also to be anticipated. However, normal services should be available before 08:30 and between 17:00 and 20:00 (local time).

Context

Transportation-related strikes are common in Italy and can be highly disruptive. However, in accordance with Italian law, minimum levels of services must be guaranteed during all strikes.

Advice

Travelers are advised to allow for extra time to reach their destinations.
