An explosion took place outside Nabi Akram mosque in the city of Herat (Herat province) on Sunday, March 25, shortly after 13:00 (local time) during midday prayers. The blast reportedly occurred as guards attempted to stop two individuals from entering the Shi'a mosque; one of the attackers subsequently detonated his explosives while the other was shot by the guards. According to authorities, at least one civilian was killed and some nine more injured, though the death toll is expected to rise. The area has been cordoned off while officials respond to the scene. Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack.
