UK: Section of M1 motorway to close May 11-13

Planned closure on the M1 motorway between Junction 23A and Junction 24 on May 11-13; transportation disruptions to be expected

Warning

Event

From Friday, May 11, through Sunday, May 13, the M1 motorway between Junction 23A and Junction 24 will be closed to traffic while construction proceeds on a new bridge. Southbound traffic on this portion of the M1 - one of the busiest roadways in the UK - will be closed from 20:00 (local time) on Friday, and northbound traffic will be closed beginning at midnight. All lanes will reopen at 15:00 on Sunday. Traffic will be diverted using Ashby Road (A453) in both directions. British authorities have warned that significant traffic congestion in the area is to be expected and have advised drivers to avoid the area if possible during the closure.

Advice

Travelers in the United Kingdom are advised to allow for extra time to reach their destinations, especially individuals traveling to East Midlands Airport, located off Junction 23A on the M1, as the disrupted traffic pattern is expected to lengthen travel time.
