Kyrgyzstan: Demonstrations planned in Bishkek until April 15

Rallies in Bishkek through April 15 to commemorate the 2010 revolution despite ban by authorities; avoid all demonstrations

Informational

Event

Rallies are planned in Bishkek in the coming days to commemorate the ouster of former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev on April 15, 2010. The gatherings are taking place despite a government ban currently in effect barring all rallies and demonstrations in Bishkek's Leninsky District from April 1 until April 15. Should the events proceed, they will likely take place near the White House in Leninsky District in the days leading up to Sunday, April 15.

An increased security presence and localized transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all demonstrations. As all demonstrations in Leninsky district have been banned until April 15, police will likely disperse any gatherings in the area and clashes between rally participants and security personnel cannot be ruled out.

Context

As a result of what is known as the Second Kyrgyz Revolution, Bakiyev resigned on April 15, 2010, after five years in power following a series of mass protests across the country.

Advice

Individuals in Bishkek are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution due to the risk of potential associated violence, and anticipate traffic disruptions around all public gatherings.
