Burundi: Police arrest 21 people in Bujumbura April 10

Burundian police forces arrested 21 people in the Carama district of the capital Bujumbura on Tuesday, April 10. The suspects - including army officers, police officers, and civilians - were arrested during a meeting where they were allegedly discussing plans to carry out actions that would threaten national security. However, more precise information has not been released. The detainees are currently being held and interrogated. An investigation is underway to determine the charges against them.

Context

In February, the Burundian police publicly announced that they would arrest those accused of “disturbing” public order ahead of the May 17 constitutional referendum. If the referendum passes, President Pierre Nkurunziza will be allowed to remain in power until 2034.

Political violence persists throughout Burundi in the aftermath of the country's contested July 2015 elections. Nkurunziza was elected to a controversial third term in 2015, despite the fact that Burundian law stipulates a maximum presidential tenure of two five-year terms.
