Syria: Demonstrations in Damascus April 14 following joint airstrikes

Demonstrations in Damascus April 14 following joint American-British-French airstrikes; additional protests possible in the coming days

Warning

Event

Hundreds of Syrians reportedly participated in several demonstrations in Damascus on Saturday, April 14, in a display of opposition and defiance to a series of joint airstrikes carried out by the US, UK, and France early on April 14 (local time). Additional related demonstrations are possible in Damascus in the coming days. The US and allies have threatened to launch additional strikes if the Syrian government carries out further chemical weapons attacks.

Context

The United States, United Kingdom, and France launched joint strikes targeting the Syrian regime in the early hours of April 14, in response to the alleged chemical attack carried out by the Syrian government in Douma on April 7. The suspected chemical attack killed at least 70 and wounded hundreds of others. Syria and Russia have denied that chemical weapons were used.

Advice

Due to extremely poor security conditions, Western governments generally advise against all travel to Syria, with some banning travel to the country. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to any travel to Syria.
