Mount Io, located in the Kirishima mountain range on Kyushu island, erupted at 15:39 (local time) on Thursday, April 19. Authorities have issued a level 3 warning, which advises individuals to stay at least 2 km (1.25 mi) from the crater. No casualties or damages have been reported.

Context

Japan has 110 active volcanoes, 47 of which are under constant monitoring. In September 2014, 63 people were killed during the eruption of Mount Ontake, the worst volcanic disaster in Japan in nearly 90 years.
