At least 14 killed in Taliban attacks in Dih Yak and Jaghatu districts (eastern Ghazni province) overnight May 21-22

Warning

Event

At least 14 police officers have been confirmed dead and 12 others injured following a series of attacks carried out by the Taliban at two locations in Ghazni province (east) overnight May 21-22. The Taliban launched the first attack in Dih Yak district and the second in Jaghatu district, targeting several security checkpoints and triggering intense exchanges of fire with security forces.

Additionally, on May 21, the Taliban threatened to perpetrate attacks against "military and intelligence centers" in the capital Kabul, urging residents to avoid areas in close proximity to such facilities.

Context

On April 25, the Taliban issued a statement announcing the launch of their annual spring offensive, which coincides every year with the arrival of warmer weather that allows militants to move more easily over Afghanistan's mountainous terrain. The terrorist group launched multiple attacks in Badghis, Farah, and Ghazni provinces throughout April and May, killing dozens of individuals including both security forces and civilians.

Advice

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
