French officials record over 700 earthquakes between May 10 and May 25

According to the French government's Geological and Mining Research Bureau (BRGM), over 700 earthquakes have been recorded in Mayotte between May 10 and May 25. Although most earthquakes have been relatively minor, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded on Friday, May 25, and a 5.8-magnitude quake occurred on Wednesday, May 15. Also on May 15, local authorities opened a crisis unit to prepare for additional and potentially stronger earthquakes.

Advice

Individuals present in the impacted region are advised to monitor the situation, to be prepared for more earthquakes, and to heed any instructions issued by local authorities or their home governments. In the event of an earthquake, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
