Indonesia: 5.8-magnitude earthquake hits Sumatra coast June 13

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale hit the western coast of Sumatra island on Wednesday, June 13. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake struck shortly after 06:00 (local time) 246 km (152 mi) from Padang. No tsunami warning has been issued. Several aftershock have been recorded. Details regarding potential casualties and material damages are still emerging.

Context

Indonesia lies within the active seismic zone known as "the Pacific Ring of Fire." In December 2016, a powerful and shallow earthquake hit Western Aceh province killing 97 people and injuring 500 others.
